"Oh, so you can just work from anywhere."
If I had a dollar for every time I have heard this follow up question / statement I might be retired by now. Actually I wouldn't. I like my work. But I sure have heard this particular line many times in my life.
"No, not really," I start to explain. Then I might give one of the reasons I'll explain in this article and try to move the conversation in another direction. I don't like talking about work with most folks. But you, my affiliate subscribers, I will. So here I'll try to lay it all out in one short read.
Full disclaimer: I have no desire to be a "digital nomad". If you're unaware of this term, it describes those who travel around from Hotel to Hotel or in a van while working at an Internet hustle to pay the bills. I'm not saying it's impossible. Perhaps if I had a desire to do this I would have figured it out and been able to offer you some tips on how to do it.
Whatever the case, in the type of affiliate marketing I do it's very important to have a good work space. I need a quality office chair and a desk with at least 2 monitors. It's also nice to have a laptop, and some more relaxed workspaces, like I am using to write this article. It usually takes time to make these spaces for yourself. If you're always on the move you'll have to go through setting up and getting comfortable over and over again.
But what if you have a great van or RV where the work spaces can come with you. Well, what about your workspace surroundings? Noise, neighbours, and other nuances exist everywhere. What about your Internet connection? Fussing around with that is extremely annoying for me. And then there's all that time and energy spent travelling between stops.
Travel is expensive, and so are short stays. Almost every hotel will offer you a discount for staying weekly or monthly instead of daily. If you sign a lease to rent a place, it's even better value. I don't like to waste one cent in this business! For example, I've paid $5 for an article that generated me thousands of dollars. If travel costs are always on your mind, perhaps you will skip a small business expense that could have been a big money-maker for you.
Travel also brings distractions. The time you're out being a tourist might seem justified, and you may be able to work it into your "spare time", but will it just end there? In the morning when you should be scheduling calls and analysing your stats, you could find yourself trying to decide which photo to post to your Instagram account.
And finally, you might not want to read this but, having a routine is generally a good idea as an affiliate. While you'll have freedom to work when you want, I have found that it's more productive to stick to a schedule. This keeps me from both overworking and underworking.
Staying in one place can be difficult for affiliates. You might feel like an outsider and want to leave. Sometimes you should, but other times you should dig your heels in and make a home base. I wrote an article a few years ago about the value that affiliates bring to their local community. Read that for some inspiration!
When I started CashMirrors over 10 years ago I called it the "easiest and best" way to make money on the Internet. The reality is that there is no easy way to do this. So I have decided, for at least the time being, stop offering our turn-key website building accounts. This includes both the portal websites and top 5 websites, and all of the features that came with them.
Don't worry! If you have an active account it will not be disabled. And if you don't, feel free to reach out and maybe we can get you set up. I still want to help affiliates and grow this community, but only with people who are willing to work hard and make sacrifices in order to be successful. This is not the easiest and best way to make money for most people. But for myself, and at least some of you, perhaps it is.
